Carl was recommended to me by an old guest on show and he has a great story of rising from a staff, to COO, the in 2002 to managing partner at Blum Shapiro. The firm is the largest regional accounting, tax and business consulting firm based in New England with offices in West Hartford and Shelton, CT, Quincy, Newton and Boston, MA and Providence, RI. Carl started a the firm when it only had 40 people total. In the last 30 years they have experience 10x growth with now over 400 people.

He shared with me that one of the reasons for their growth was their success in radio ads, a medium I wasn’t sure many CPA’s used to promote their firms.

Blum Shapiro has also differentiated itself in a way that is particularly interesting to me. The decided many years ago not to audit public traded companies. They still do some of the SOX and compliance work for public companies but not the audits.

He also shared with us something he keeps on his desk every day. While this isn’t the actual design of the list, it gives us an idea of what’s on Carl’s mind when managing his team.
