  Other Social Media Sites? Do it!

  Building an online brand isn’t just about LinkedIn – that’s just the place to start. From there you should branch out to as many other sites as possible. And if you do branch out, make sure you post lots of positive content rather than pictures of your weekends out. Many recruiters and other professionals may friend you on Facebook, follow you on Twitter, or connect with you through other social media outlets during recruiting, so keep that in mind.

  Control is key

  It’s my personal advice to share whatever you want, just make sure you know who can see it. I have literally seen students post things like, “Just had my interview at “X” firm, not sure I want to work there.” NOOO! You never know who may be watching your activity. Your friends or competition may decide to share that with a prospective firm.

  Be Enthusiastic, Be Open.

  By far the best way to handle social media is to be on as many sites as you personally want and to be as open as you can. Employers prefer people who are open and positive on social media to people they can find nothing about. It can be a red flag if you’re not online. When I was in college I was on Foursquare, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram. Build your online presence by being everywhere and building a great reputation.
